The LEAGUE Curriculum by Learning to Give welcomes you to its Max M. Fisher Online Institute! This Web-based, self-paced tutorial allows you to learn the benefits of philanthropy education (giving time, talent and treasure for the common good), hints for teaching, and have some interactive fun along the way.

Please carefully review the requirements which will ensure that your Max M. Fisher Online Institute experience is easy and painless. Because each module builds on earlier information, we recommend that you take the modules in order. Individual modules average 30- to 45-minutes of online time.

LEAGUE COACH ORIENTATION

Modules 1 and 2 are part of LEAGUE Basic Training for Teacher Coaches. Other components for LEAGUE Basic Training are LEAGUE Website Orientation and Content of Coaches Playbook.

MODULE 1: Defining Philathropy LEAGUE Coach Orientation

Summary: Philanthropy What? Learn basic definitions that establish the common language and concepts which help an educator talk to young people about behavior, respect, caring, community, and doing the right thing. Spend time reflecting on your own motivations for and experiences with philanthropy.

Objectives:

The learner will:

  1. define philanthropy as the giving and/or sharing of time, talent and treasure and taking public citizen action for the common good.
  2. recognize the contributions and value of the nonprofit sector.
  3. link or list how philanthropy enhances the social contract and a civil society.
  4. reflect on personal motivations, experiences and benefits of philanthropy.

MODULE 3: Reasons to Teach Philanthropy

Summary: Explore the reasons for teaching philanthropy…from the ideals of the teacher, through the roles of public education and philanthropy in supporting democracy, to a discussion of the current status of our own democracy The module concludes by showing how philanthropy education supports and enriches other school improvement efforts.

  1. identify the relationship of philanthropy education to the mission of schools in a democracy.
  2. be able to discuss the status of democracy and philanthropy education in the United States and around the world.
  3. know how philanthropy education supports other school improvement efforts.

MODULE 4: Raising Philanthropic Children

Summary: Explore the emerging research on the biology of philanthropic behavior, how the concept of altruism develops as children grow, the various religions’ perspectives on philanthropy, and adult motivations for giving and serving. Learn the internal and personal reasons that people are philanthropic. Philanthropy is a fundamental human behavior that helps us form and support communities.

  2. describe developmentally age-appropriate altruistic behavior.
  3. compare and contrast the philanthropic underpinnings of the worlds’ major religions.

MODULE 5: The Four-Sector Society

Overview: This module explores the four major sectors of United States society: 1) business/corporate, 2) government, 3) nonprofit/independent, and 4) family/household. A major emphasis in this exploration is developing an understanding about how these sectors interact with one another, providing the United States with new ideas that keep our democracy fresh, and understanding that when one or more of the sectors fail, one of more of the other sectors will respond to keep the society strong. Included in this exploration are the connections between the independent sector and the K-12 level discipline concepts in economics (including careers and jobs) and geography.

MODULE 6: A Brief History of Philanthropy

Overview: This module provides a broad and sweeping overview of the history of the philanthropic sector from its first publicized roots in the Egyptian Book of the Dead to the current emerging non-governmental sectors (ngo’s) in fledgling democracies. Many of the root idea’s of philanthropy, are also the source concepts of the framework of the United States democracy, and many of the action’s that resulted in our nation, occurred within the nonprofit sector of society. Spanning several thousand years, this module cannot go into depth on any one historic period or idea. The goal of this module is to identify that the nonprofit sector is both a product of/and a major contributor to the ideas and activities in history that fundamentally shape our nation and world. The teaching of history should always include the role and influence of the independent, non-governmental, sector.

Overview: This module explores programs available to students where philanthropy is already infused and can be easily emphasized.
