The purpose of this unit is to introduce learners to the concept of philanthropy and describe the significant impact that philanthropists have made on American civil and political life and how philanthropy reinforces American Values and Principles. Learners will also identify many of the qualities that exemplify philanthropists and recognize those qualities in a local philanthropist.
Learners will define philanthropy and describe the significant impact that philanthropists have made in American civil and political life, and how philanthropy reinforces American values and principles. Learners will identify qualities that exemplify philanthropists, and recognize those qualities in a local philanthropist.
The learner will:
- define “philanthropy.”
- give examples of philanthropy in America’s past and present.
- describe how philanthropic acts reinforce American values and principles.
- identify qualities that define a philanthropist.
- identify local citizens who are contributing to the common good.
- identify a local philanthropist who is contributing to the common good and the qualities that this philanthropist portrays.
Learners will be evaluated on the quality of their classroom involvement in brainstorming as well as the quality of their research and their written and oral presentations of their research.
In Lesson Two: Philanthropist Wall of Fame, learners will discuss Attachment One: Qualities of a Philanthropist Rubric with their family and ask for their suggestions in choosing a local philanthropist.
