The purpose of this unit is to introduce learners to the concept of “philanthropy” and the qualities that philanthropists share, especially those qualities of character and personal virtue. Learners will explore modern day philanthropists and describe the significant impact that they had/are having. They will also explore how philanthropists might hold nonprofits accountable. Finally the learners will explore numerous Non-Profit Organizations and Foundations and simulate making personal contribution decisions.
Learners will understand the meaning of “philanthropy,” associated concepts, and the qualities that philanthropists share, especially those qualities of character and personal virtue. Learners will analyze the “new philanthropists,” who they are, what they give, to whom they give, their personal qualities, and how they hold people and organizations accountable for their philanthropic efforts. They will consider different causes and issues about which they care to decide which they might support.
The learner will:
- define and use the vocabulary of philanthropy.
- list and describe how volunteer groups act for the common good.
- identify three personal qualities that most new philanthropists possess.
- describe the philanthropic endeavors of the new-style philanthropists and relate these endeavors to community.
- list three ways new philanthropists might hold people accountable for their philanthropic contributions.
- express his/her own personal choice of philanthropic activity and explain how it might promote the fundamental democratic principle of common good.
The assessment will focus on learner involvement in the activities, classroom discussion and the learner’s essays, which will demonstrate self-evaluation and reflection.
