Instructional Procedure(s):

Anticipatory Set:

Tell the students that they will be taking an anonymous survey.  Distribute Attachment One: How Much Do I Have To Give? ask the students to complete it and hand it back for later discussion.

  • Review the display of the “Fundamental Democratic Principles and Beliefs” and the “Character Traits of an Awesome Citizen” created in the previous lesson.

  • Randomly distribute the completed “How Much Do I Have To Give?” questionnaire and have learners call out the responses they find on their sheet as the questions are read.  Attempt to draw some sort of conclusion on each of the questions.  Lead a discussion, following the completion of the survey results, leading to some general overriding conclusions concerning the entire survey.

  • Assuming that one of the conclusions the learners will reach is that they personally have it ‘pretty good’ compared to so many others, distribute the Attachment Two: NOW Philanthropy Pie Charts and ask the learners to reflect and using the chart, to show their personal present levels of distribution of time, talent and treasure.  Note: Learners should use two different colors (or a pencil and pen) in filling out the pie charts, indicating the color that represents self and the color that represents others.

  • Distribute the Attachment Three: MYGOAL Philanthropy Pie Charts and ask learners to reflect and show, using the pie chart, how they propose to distribute their personal time, talent and treasure in the future.

Assessment:

The learners will be evaluated on their participation in discussion, the depth of their thought in reflection, as well as the completing the assigned tasks.

Cross-Curriculum Extensions:

Have the learners develop a Personal Philanthropic Goals/Mission Statement to be displayed, anonymously, for others to read and draw inspiration from.
