Water is essential to all life; however it is not abundant in many areas. In order to preserve our usable water resources, water conservation needs to be a component of everyday life. Conservation can be done in a variety of ways. Through the completion of this unit, learners will develop an understanding of the water cycle, how to measure rainfall (water) and why it is essential to conserve this precious resource. Learners are able to display their ability to be a good citizen and stewards of the Earth by educating those around them about how these things can be done.
The learner will:
- identify uses of water.
- state why water is essential to our world.
- illustrate their favorite use of water.
- taste water.
- understand that it is the civic responsibility of everyone to conserve water.
- discuss the water cycle.
- identify key components of the water cycle.
- state why water conservation is important in relation to the water cycle.
- demonstrate an understanding that water conservation is an act of stewardship for the Earth.
- learn the three states of matter that water becomes.
- measure water in various containers.
- define water conservation and the importance of the concept.
- discuss methods of water conservation.
- discuss potential problems due to lack of water.
- identify uses of water.
- create informational posters to promote water conservation in the community.
Learners will create and display posters illustrating ways to conserve water sharing what they have learned about Environmental Stewardship and how it applies to water conservation.
Learners will display mastery of subject matter through the ability to verbalize key ideas of the unit. A daily review should be completed to revisit the previous day’s topic.
Younger learners may need additional guidance from the teacher as their experience in this subject matter may be limited. Be prepared to prompt learners with additional leading questions.
