Purpose:

Learners write an acrostic poem using the letters of their name to communicate their trustworthy nature.

Duration:

One 20-minute Class Period

Objectives:

The learner will:

  • write an acrostic poem about trustworthiness.

Service Experience:

Although this lesson contains a service project example, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

This character education mini-lesson is not intended to be a service learning lesson or to meet the K-12 Service-Learning Standards for Quality Practice. The character education units will be most effective when taught in conjunction with a student-designed service project that provides a real world setting in which students can develop and practice good character and leadership skills.  For ideas and suggestions for organizing service events go to generationon.org.

Materials:

brainstorming charts and definitions from the previous lessons

Instructional Procedure(s):

Anticipatory Set:

Read and discuss a quote about trust and friendship.

“I'm not upset that you lied to me, I'm upset that from now on I can't believe you.” --Nietzsche

“Trust is like a vase. Once it's broken, though you can fix it, the vase will never be same again.”

  • Have the students write an acrostic using the letters in their name written down the page. They come up with a phrase or word for each letter in their name that describes their dependability, trustworthiness, or examples of their actions and beliefs related to trust.
  • Students make a final copy of their acrostic to display on the wall.
