Learners reflect on their own experience with trustworthy behavior or respond to a quote about trust.
Duration:
One 20-minute lesson
Objectives:
The learner will:
- reflect in writing about trustworthiness as it relates to reputation, loyalty, and courage to do the right thing.
Service Experience:
This character education mini-lesson is not intended to be a service learning lesson or to meet the K-12 Service-Learning Standards for Quality Practice. The character education units will be most effective when taught in conjunction with a student-designed service project that provides a real world setting in which students can develop and practice good character and leadership skills. Materials:

Instructional Procedure(s):
Anticipatory Set
Write these words on the board: loyalty, honesty, good reputation, keeps promises, and courage to do the right thing. Remind them that in the previous lesson, they read about people in Texas history who exhibited these traits of trustworthiness.
- Tell the students to think of an example from their own life when they acted trustworthy through one of these traits. They may choose to write in their character education journal about this example or respond in their journals to one of the quotes below. Pass back the papers from Lesson Three for reference,
- Students may choose one of the following quotes and write about how it relates to the trait of trustworthiness:
- “It takes many good deeds to build a good reputation, and only one bad one to lose it” --Benjamin Franklin
- “If all my friends were to jump off a bridge, I wouldn't follow. I'd be at the bottom to catch them when they fall.” --unknown
- “The greater the loyalty of a group toward the group, the greater is the motivation among the members to achieve the goals of the group, and the greater the probability that the group will achieve its goals.” --Rensis Likert
- “Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none.” --William Shakespeare
- “Character is doing the right thing when nobody's looking. There are too many people who think that the only thing that's right is to get by, and the only thing that's wrong is to get caught.” --J.C. Watts
