Unit Overview:

This unit contains a specific plan for a service project that other schools have successfully carried out.  However, it can be adapted to fit local needs and interests of the students.

Unit Purpose:

This unit is designed to guide students in learning about literacy and the importance of reading, and to help them to plan and execute a book drive to help others gain access to books.  The students will reflect on the book drive after it is completed.

Unit Duration:

Five 45-minute class periods, a 30-minute class period, plus time to carry out a service project

Unit Objectives:

 

The learner will:
  • listen to statistics about literacy.
  • discuss the statistics and reflect on their feelings about literacy in the world, the nation, the state, and their local community.
  • form a plan of action to improve community literacy and access to books.
  • brainstorm ways to collect books for donation.
  • plan the steps of the service project.
  • contact partner organizations with the help of the teacher.
  • carry out the service project.
  • create blogs using Weebly or another school-appropriate site for creating websites and blogs.
  • write about the books they have chosen to donate.
  • monitor and write about student reactions to books.
  • share the collected books with the recipients.
  • read with the recipients and participate in reading activities, if determined by the project plan.
  • reflect on the service project through a writing project.
