Unit Overview:

This unit is designed to familiarize students with the term philanthropy and characteristics of philanthropic people and organizations. Students will be learning the importance of philanthropy by working in groups to develop questions to interview a philanthropic organization and report the information back to their classmates. They will also be learning business letter skills and writing a thank-you letter. This will re-emphasize the importance of the organization as well as give them an appreciation for writing follow-up letters such as the thank-you.

Unit Purpose:

This unit will allow students to gain a basic understanding of philanthropic characteristics of people and organizations, and how they impact their own lives. Students will also develop an appreciation of the importance of thank-you letters.

Unit Objectives:

The learners will:
  • define philanthropy.
  • list characteristics of a philanthropic person.
  • identify actions demonstrating philanthropy.
  • describe a personal act of philanthropy.
  • list local philanthropic organizations.
  • obtain information from an interview.
  • use correct business format in a letter.

Service Experience:

Although lessons in this unit contain service project examples, decisions about service plans and implementation should be made by students, as age appropriate.

Students will conduct interviews with members of local philanthropic organizations and share the information with the rest of the school in a hall display.

Unit Assessment:

  • Business letter, formatted correctly, clearly showing the student's understanding and appreciation for the organization.
  • Journal entry describing the student's philanthropic act and how they felt about it.
  • Teacher observation of the questions each group develops and the class report.
  • Content of letter clearly showing their understanding and appreciation for the organization.

School/Home Connection:

They may ask a parent for ideas on philanthropic organizations.
