Moving Toward Your Mission
Adapted from Community Partnerships with Youth, Inc.

Purpose:

  • To help youth transform their personal missions into a community service project or activity.

Activity:

  1. Ask participants to review the Mission statements that closely matched their personal missions. List the organizations.

  2. Group participants around common missions so that each participant is a part of a group discussing the organization in which they have a personal interest.

  3. Ask groups to discuss the “Mission in Community” worksheet. Individuals may fill out the worksheet.

  4. When worksheets are completed, ask groups to share their plans with others in the small group.

Processing Questions:

Ask group to:

  1. Discuss the many resources in a community. In addition to the organizations posted, have examples of United Way reports, telephone books or information and referral guides found in voluntary action centers available for participants to review and use.

  2. Discuss whether the time is right to pursue service to any of the organizations listed.

  3. Ask them the first thing they will do to begin to create a better community. Have them write this on Worksheet #1 with the headline, “My Personal Stake in Creating a Better Community.” This is their own personal reminder.
