From Community Partnerships with Youth, Inc.
Purpose:
- To introduce the ritual of celebration to a board of trustees and to encourage celebration when a board meeting or event has been successful.
Activity:
- Hand out “celebration” fun-makers and tell participants that on the count of 3, they are to sing, scream, blow, throw, wave or dance for five minutes. Note: Tape recorder could be playing, “Celebrate” by the Commodores or ask the kids
for a favorite tape.
- After five minutes, ask everyone to form a big circle. When the circle is formed, ask everyone to take a half-turn to the right so they face each other’s backs. Say, “Let’s give ourselves a pat on the back for a good job.” (Caution youth participants not to “pound” but to “pat”!) Ask them to turn to the other side and pat that person on the back. Then break for refreshments. All celebrations have food!
Variation:
- Have participants form a circle and give each other a round of applause. Tell participants to start clapping after the person on their left has clapped for five seconds. Start the clapping until everyone has joined in. Then break for refreshments.
- Ask participants to sit in a circle on the floor or on chairs. Tell them to start waving their arms five seconds after the person to their left starts. Start by jumping up and waving until all participants are standing and waving. This version gives us the Standing “O” (ovation) or the winning wave. High five’s can also be used with the group. Then break for refreshments.
